The Polecat is a patented, South African engineered product, built to industry-standard practice using components that carry full factory certifications. Below is the whole trust stack, laid out so you can verify it yourself – starting with our granted patent, moving through component certification and industry compliance, to the engineer whose name is on every unit that leaves our Pretoria workshop.
Our Patent (2023/11222)
South African Patent No. 2023/11222 was granted to Gert Johannes Bouwer on 26 June 2024 under the Patents Act 1978, section 44(1). The seal of the Patent Office was affixed at Pretoria. This is a full utility patent – not a design registration, not a trademark – protecting the specific mechanical arrangement that makes the Polecat legally impossible to copy.
Component-level certifications
Every electrical and mechanical component used in the Polecat is sourced from suppliers carrying full factory certifications appropriate to their category.
This includes:
- Motor gearbox and drive assembly – manufactured to IE standards for continuous-duty gate motor applications
- Electronic control board – RoHS-compliant components, ISO-certified factory of origin
- 433.92 MHz receiver module – CE-marked, complies with SA’s short-range radio regulations
- 12V/24V charger circuit – overload, over-voltage, over-temperature protection built in
- Steel housing – grade specified for outdoor structural use in coastal and inland South African conditions
- Rubber gaskets and seals – IP54-rated for outdoor gate motor housings
- 15Ah LiFePo4 battery (standard on 24V, upgrade on 12V) – integrated BMS meets IEC 62133 safety standard
Industry compliance
Polecat Gate Motors complies with the general industry standard for gate motor manufacture in South Africa. As our national installer network and insurance-partnership conversations mature, we are preparing formal certification documentation.
Current compliance posture:

- POPIA-compliant business practice (Information Officer: Gert Johannes Bouwer)
- Consumer Protection Act (CPA) 68 of 2008 compliant warranty and returns policies
- Electronic Communications and Transactions Act (ECTA) 25 of 2002 compliant electronic sales practice
- Approved for use with residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial sliding gates
Awards & recognition
The Polecat Tamper Proof Gate Motor was awarded the Commercial Prize at the Boerepatente (“farmer patents”) competition, held during Nampo Harvest Day 2024 in Bothaville. Run by Grain SA together with Omnia Nutriology, Boerepatente celebrates the most practical, real-world engineering to come out of South African hands each year.
The prize was awarded to Ferdi Bouwer of Pretoria for the Polecat. The judges recognised it as a genuinely theft-resistant design – a gate motor secured in an upright steel container and set in cement – the same patented approach that protects every unit we build. Being singled out for the Commercial Prize, among decades of celebrated farmer ingenuity, is recognition we are proud of.
Design authority – Gert Bouwer
The Polecat is the design output of Gert Bouwer – a South African mechanical engineer with over 25 years of hands-on experience across residential, commercial and industrial applications. Gert is the granted holder of Patent 2023/11222, the registered POPIA Information Officer for Polecat Gate Motors, and the design authority responsible for every mechanical decision in the product.
Every Polecat unit that leaves our workshop at Plot 41R Zwavelpoort, Pretoria has been designed under Gert’s engineering signature. When you buy a Polecat, you are buying a product with a named, credentialed South African design authority behind it – not a rebranded import.
